Does it hurt to get a dental crown?

3d image of the procedure for a dental crown houston txDuring the actual procedure of preparing a tooth, the patient should feel absolutely nothing. Local anesthetics are used to make sure the tooth is fully numb before performing the procedure. After the procedure, when the anesthesia wears off, it is common to have a little gum sensitivity that typically lasts just the day of the procedure. For most patients, the discomfort is a mild annoyance and does not require any pain medication.

Not like most patients?

For some patients, a little over-the-counter pain medication is required the first day, but this is very rare. Tooth sensitivity after a dental crown procedure is not very common. After the procedure is completed we always apply de-sensitizer medications to minimize any tooth sensitivity. If the tooth has a large break, or cavity very close to the nerve of the tooth, the risk of sensitivity increases. However, we always warn patients about this before the procedure so there are no surprises.
